We had the chance to try this monster-filled party game.
In November, developer Big Blue Bubble will release My Singing Monsters Playground, a multiplayer party game in the popular My Singing Monsters franchise. (My Singing Monsters is a free-to-play mobile game that allows players to collect and care for singing monsters.)
We had the chance to try My Singing Monsters Playground before the game is released.
My Singing Monsters Playground features seven playable characters: Congle, Entbrat, Furcorn, Kayna, Mammott, Pango, and PomPom. You can unlock costumes for each character as you play, though these are unlocked at random. Each time you start My Singing Monsters Playground, you can choose the monster you’d like to be and the costume you’d like to wear. You can also change your monster’s costume later on at the Costume Booth.
My Singing Monsters Playground offers three gameplay modes.
First, the Tournament mode allows up to four players to compete in a match of 10, 15, or 20 different mini-games.
Next, the Solo Gauntlet mode challenges players to win as many randomly selected mini-games in a row as they can.
Finally, the Free Play mode allows players to instantly play any of the title’s mini-games.
Each mini-game supports up to four real players. If you’re playing on your own or with less than four players, the rest of the group will consist of computer-controlled opponents. You can choose the skill level of the computer-controlled monsters by selecting “Easy,” “Medium,” or “Hard,” depending on how much of a challenge you’d like to have (this difficulty setting will carry across the game’s modes until you start a new gameplay session).
While many of the mini-games in My Singing Monsters Playground are “free-for-all” games, meaning every player competes on their own, some are team-based or even one-vs-three. Here are just a few examples of some of the mini-games in My Singing Monsters Playground:
“Thumpede” is a free-for-all running game that challenges players to outrun a stampede. Players will run toward the bottom of the screen, and they’ll need to quickly change directions to avoid obstacles that will slow them down. The goal is to be the last player to be caught by the stampede.
“Glowbe in the Dark” is a one-vs-three game, where one player becomes a “Thumper” and the other three are the “Runners.” The “Thumper” is challenged to bop all of the other players with a mallet as they run around a pitch black environment with nothing but a glowing object to light their way. The Thumper has 30 seconds to bop all of their opponents. If they succeed, they win. If time runs out and even a single player is still standing, the Thumper loses and the other three monsters win.
Finally, “Hazardous Hurdle” is a free-for-all game that takes place on a circular play area with a large, hot pipe that moves around in a circle on the ground. The pipe will randomly change direction and can move in both clockwise and counterclockwise directions. Players need to run or jump over the pipe to avoid it as it moves, with the last player standing winning the game.
Before each game begins, players are presented with a playable tutorial that allows them to practice the game before trying it for real.
In the game’s Tournament Mode, players earn Diamonds at the end of each mini-game, depending on their performance. At the end of a Tournament, bonus Diamonds are awarded to some monsters based on a variety of conditions, and there’s a musical celebration for the winner that sees all four monsters sing a song.
Finally, players can earn relics as they play that can be spent at the Prize Machine to unlock costumes and decorations.
My Singing Monsters Playground will be released on Switch, PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, Xbox Series X/S, Xbox One, and PC on November 9, 2021. The game is rated E for Everyone by the ESRB.
