Celebrate Halloween with family-friendly games like Luigi's Mansion 3 and MediEvil.
Fall is finally here! This season of changing leaves and cooler temperatures is a big time for major video game releases, and October packs quite a few, including Call of Duty: Modern Warfare and Nintendo’s newest take on a fitness game: Ring Fit Adventure. With Halloween quickly approaching, October will also see the release of lots of spooky games, like the family-friendly titles Luigi’s Mansion 3 and MediEvil.
Luigi’s Mansion 3

Appropriate for: Kids who are comfortable using console controllers
Just in time for Halloween (the game comes out on October 31), Luigi’s Mansion 3 will let kids and adults join Luigi on another haunted adventure, as he must rescue Mario from hotel full of ghosts! As you explore the hotel, you can use Luigi’s Poltergust G-00 vacuum to suck up ghosts and other objects or even slam them around. While the game may feature ghosts, it’s family-friendly and charming, rather than realistic and scary. This time around, Luigi also has a doppelganger companion named Gooigi, who can help you out on your quest. If you’re playing solo, you can control both Luigi and Gooigi by switching between them. Or, you can team up with a friend and let them control Gooigi for you. Outside of the game’s story mode, a ScareScraper mode will allow up to eight players to compete in a variety of mini-games locally or through online multiplayer. You’ll need a Nintendo Switch Online membership to access the game’s online multiplayer functionality.

Appropriate for: Teens who are comfortable with the macabre
MediEvil was originally released on PlayStation in 1998. Now, it’s been completely remade for modern consoles. The game stars Sir Daniel Fortesque, a knight who has been resurrected (though he’s now just a skeleton) by his former enemy, a sorcerer named Zarok. The hack-n-slash game will allow you to explore the world of Gallowmere and defeat a variety of enemies in your quest to defeat Zarok once and for all. MediEvil is rated T by the ESRB, with Content Descriptors for “Blood and Gore” and “Violence.”
Great if your kids love: The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, Spyro Reignited Trilogy
Ring Fit Adventure

Appropriate for: Older kids who enjoy physical activity
Ring Fit Adventure is an exercise adventure game for Switch that uses two new accessories — the Ring-Con and Leg Strap — to translate your real-world motions into in-game actions. The game’s story will allow you to explore 20 worlds and complete 100 levels on a quest to defeat a body-building dragon. In addition to a main story mode, additional gameplay modes will offer different workout experiences to suit your play style or the amount of time you have to play for that session. Plants vs. Zombies: Battle for Neighborville

Appropriate for: Older kids who like games with fast-paced action
Plants vs. Zombies: Battle for Neighborville is the latest game in the popular Plants vs. Zombies franchise, which focuses on the neverending battle between — you guessed it — plants and zombies. In this third-person shooter, you can compete with and against other real players in six different online modes, as well as hang out with friends in the game’s social areas. The game features new kinds of plants and zombies, each with their own skills and specialties.

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare

Inappropriate for young teens and children
This latest installment in the popular Call of Duty first-person-shooter franchise (not to be confused with Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare from 2007) features both a single-player campaign mode and online multiplayer modes. According to a blog post from Activision (the publisher of the Call of Duty series), “The Campaign engulfs you in a raw and gritty narrative, bringing unrivalled intensity and shining a light on the changing nature of modern war.” Call of Duty: Modern Warfare has been rated M by the ESRB, with Content Descriptors for “Blood and Gore,” “Intense Violence,” “Strong Language,” “Suggestive Themes,” and “Use of Drugs.” The game also contains in-app purchases.
