Humble Choice: A SuperParent Guide
Everything you need to know about this PC game subscription service.
From Xbox Game Pass to Ubisoft+ and beyond, there are lots of game subscriptions services available for families to choose from.
Here’s everything you need to know about Humble’s game subscription service, Humble Choice. (Humble operates a PC game and software marketplace that’s designed to raise money for charity.)
What is Humble Choice? How does the service work?
Humble Choice is a game subscription service for PC games.
Each month, Humble Choice subscribers receive a selection of PC games that are theirs to own forever, even if they cancel their Humble Choice subscription.
Humble Choice subscribers can also play games in the Humble Games Collection as long as they have a Humble Choice subscription. New games are added to the Humble Games Collection on a monthly basis. Subscribers can browse and download the games in the Humble Games Collection by downloading the Humble app on a Windows PC.
Finally, Humble Choice subscribers can access savings and other discounts on Humble’s store. The longer someone remains a Humble Choice subscriber, the more rewards they’ll be eligible to receive.
For instance, all new subscribers will immediately receive a 10 percent discount on future purchases made at Humble’s store. Once someone has been a subscriber for three months, this discount will increase to 15 percent, and so on. Currently, the maximum available discount is 20 percent off, which is earned after remaining a Humble Choice subscriber for at least 12 months.
How much does Humble Choice cost?
The Humble Choice subscription is available for $11.99 per month or $129 per year.
Five percent of each membership is donated to the charity that Humble is featuring during that month. For instance, Humble’s featured charity for May 2022 was The Global Foodbanking Network.
Humble Choice allows subscribers to “skip a month” if they’re not interested in receiving the games that will be featured during that month. The games for each month are announced before the “auto-billing” date for subscribers. This gives subscribers time to “skip” a month before they’re automatically charged while still retaining their Humble Choice membership.
However, it’s worth pointing out that skipping a month will reset the subscriber’s store discount bonus. For instance, if someone has been a Humble Choice subscriber for a year, they’ll have access to the 20 percent store discount bonus. If they ever skip a month, they will revert back to the 10 percent discount level.
You can learn more about Humble Choice’s “Skipping” option on the Humble Support website.
Finally, Humble allows shoppers to purchase a Humble Choice subscription for someone else as a gift. You can learn more about purchasing a Humble Choice subscription as a gift on the Humble Support website.
Is there anything else parents need to know about Humble Choice?
Some of the games given to Humble Choice subscribers and featured in the Humble Games Collection feature mature content and aren’t designed for children.
In addition, the Humble app doesn’t list the ESRB ratings for the games in the Humble Games Collection. Unlike console video games (like those released on Switch, PlayStation, or Xbox consoles), PC games aren’t always rated by the ESRB, so some games may simply not have a rating to list. However, even if a game has received a rating, the rating will not appear in the Humble app.
If you’re concerned about your children playing mature titles, you may need to research the games given to Humble Choice subscribers and those featured in the Humble Games Collection on your own to ensure they’re appropriate before allowing your children to play them.
