Pokemon Go in May: Shinx Research Breakthrough, Pokemon Spotlight Hours

Here are some of the updates and events coming to Pokemon Go in May 2020.

Trainers, it’s a new month, and that means there are lots of new events to look forward to in Pokemon Go!

In addition to a major Throwback Challenge event that was previously announced (it will kick off May 1 and run throughout the month of May and into June), there are some smaller events to mark on your calendar for this month.

For one, from May 1 at 1 p.m. PT until June 1 at 1 p.m. PT, you’ll earn an encounter with Shinx each time you earn a Research Breakthrough. In a news post, Niantic, the developer of Pokemon Go, said these Shinx will “come with bonus Shinx Candies!”

As a reminder, you’ll earn a Research Breakthrough each time you complete at least one Field Research task on seven separate days.

Next, a new Pokemon Spotlight Hour event will take place each Tuesday from 6 p.m. to 7 p.m. local time throughout the month of May. Here’s the breakdown of when these events will take place, and which Pokemon and bonuses they’ll feature:

  • May 5, 2020 - Shellder will appear more frequently in the wild. You’ll also earn double the normal amount of Stardust for capturing Pokemon during this event.
  • May 12, 2020 - Sunkern will appear more often, and you’ll receive twice the normal amount of experience points for capturing Pokemon.
  • May 19, 2020 - Poochyena will be the featured Pokemon. You’ll receive twice the normal amount of Pokemon Candy when you capture Pokemon during this event.
  • May 26, 2020 - Bronzor will appear more frequently, and you’ll receive twice the normal amount of Candy when you transfer Pokemon to the professor during this one-hour window.

Finally, Niantic revealed that there will be no new Team Go Rocket Special Research questlines released “from May until the end of September.” At the same time, the developer said, “We really don’t expect Team GO Rocket to be quiet all summer…” so it’s likely we’ll see Team Go Rocket featured in a different event or update during this time frame.

Keep checking back with SuperParent, as we’ll make sure to bring you more details about Pokemon Go’s future updates!
