Safer Internet Day 2020: Xbox Shared 5 Tips to Keep Kids Safe While Gaming

Xbox gathered tips and advice from its community of Xbox ambassadors.

Safer Internet Day 2020 is February 11, and to mark the yearly event, Xbox released its “Top 5 Online Gaming Safety Tips,” which were gathered from its community of over 150,000 Xbox Ambassadors. (Xbox Ambassadors are volunteers who have the goal of making “the Xbox community the best and safest place to game.”)

The first tip (and arguably the most important tip for families) reminds parents to use Xbox’s family settings on accounts used by children and teens. Xbox allows families to create separate accounts for each family member, and then lets parents set parental controls for each child.

For instance, you can ensure children only see “age appropriate content” when browsing the Microsoft Store, and you can set limits for how long each child can use the Xbox One each day, among many other options and controls.

The Ambassadors’ other tips relate to things like keeping personal information secure using Xbox’s privacy and security settings, using a VPN to protect yourself when connecting to Wi-Fi outside the home, taking breaks, and using tools like the "report" feature if you come across inappropriate content.

You can read all of the Ambassadors’ tips in detail by visiting theXbox blog.

If you want more information about Xbox’s parental control settings, and the similar settings that are available on PlayStation 4 and Switch, check out our previous coverage.
